Route planning for Laos

Kong Lor, the Bolaven Plateau and the Nam Ou, without renting a motorbike

We plan Laos routes around roads, rivers and rail: which transfers make sense, how long each one really takes, and the local drivers, boats and guides to book. You get one written proposal before you commit to anything.

Why this needs planning

The best parts of Laos are easy to see and hard to reach

  1. The famous loops assume a scooter

Kong Lor and the Bolaven waterfalls are usually reached on multi-day motorbike loops. Guides note there are few organised alternatives, and travel insurance may not cover riders without the right licence.

  2. The river route north has gone

Scheduled boats from Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw stopped when dams were built on the Nam Ou. The road is about 140 km and takes three to four hours, often more.

  3. Short distances, long days

Vientiane to Thakhek is around 340 km, Thakhek to Kong Lor another 180 or so. Public transport off the highways leaves when vehicles fill. Without a plan, transfers eat the trip.

Where we focus

Three regions where good planning changes the trip

Each is famous, each is usually reached by motorbike, and each works well without one when the transfers are planned.

Our three focus areas, with the gateway cities: Luang Prabang, Nong Khiaw, Muang Ngoi, Vang Vieng, Vientiane, Kong Lor, Thakhek, Savannakhet, Pakse, Tad Lo, Champasak, Si Phan Don. How a motorbike-free route works

The right transport for each leg

No single rule. Trains and flights for the long distances, a driver only where buses would cost you a day, boats where the river is the road.

  • Train

Vientiane to Luang Prabang in about two hours.

  • Flights

To Pakse, saving long days between north and south.

  • Driver

Where buses are thin: Kong Lor, loop roads, plateau days.

  • Boats

Up the Nam Ou to Muang Ngoi, and across to the islands.

How it works

From an email to a confirmed route

  1. Tell us the trip you have in mind. Dates, places, how many of you, and whether anyone rides.
  2. We reply with a realistic route. The order, the transfers and their real durations, and any questions.
  3. We check with local providers. Availability and written prices for your dates.
  4. You receive a written proposal. Total price, inclusions, the provider for each part, payment and cancellation terms.
  5. You decide. Nothing is booked until you accept and pay the prepayment.

Common questions

What does Laos Explore do?

We plan motorbike-free routes through Laos and arrange the local services that make them work: drivers, boats, guides and rooms. You get a written proposal with the route, total price and the provider for each part, and we are your contact for the booking. Local providers deliver the services.

Is planning free?

Yes. Asking questions and receiving a proposal costs nothing and does not commit you to anything. You pay only if you accept a proposal.

Do you only cover the three regions?

They are our focus, along with Luang Prabang and Vientiane as gateways. If your trip includes other places, tell us; we will say honestly whether we can help with them.

How quickly do you reply?

We aim to reply by email within two working days.
